William I. Koch
Before William I. “Bill” Koch earned three degrees from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, developed a successful international business and won the America’s Cup,
the pre-eminent sailing race in the world, he was a lanky Kansas teenager in search of
direction. One hot Midwestern summer, Bill Koch’s parents decided to enroll him in a
program at Culver Military Academy which was modeled after the Sea Scouts. On an
Indiana lake, he was taught to sail and in the process learned the importance of
discipline, leadership and team work, these key principles are at the core of the
Sea Scout program. Half a century has passed since Bill Koch learned the skills which
brought him success. In effort to help other young people understand the importance
of discipline, leadership, teamwork and to foster interest in sailing, Koch has
continually donated time and resources to helping the Sea Scouts. Whether by sponsoring
regattas around the United States, including Scouts in his 1992 America’s Cup campaign;
sending them to work the America’s Cup races in New Zealand, or inviting Sea Scouts to
crew aboard his boats at the 150th America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes, England, Bill Koch
is a firm believer in the Sea Scouting program. Today, the William I. Koch International
Sea Scout Cup fits firmly with Bill Koch’s desire to foster tomorrow’s leaders through
sailing.
