José I. Castro

Dr José Castro is the senior scientist at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL. His duties include the coordination of shark and other elasmobranch research among Mote and private organizations and to act as the government’s expert on the variety of shark resource issues. He evaluates shark research proposals. Dr. Castro represents the National Marine Fisheries Service on shark issues in Fishery Management Councils. He is a member of the Shark Stock Assessment Committee who determines fishing quotas for shark fisheries of the U.S. east coast. He serves as a scientific advisor and expert witness for federal and state agencies prosecuting cases involving shark resources. He is published author of books about sharks. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology from Clemson University with a dissertation of “Investigations in the Reproductive Biology of Sharks”.
